IRVINE, Calif. (CBS) - Like many so kids, 8-year-old Claudia Kiso enjoys the water and she's learning a lot here at Waterworks Aquatics in Irvine. "Freestyle, breast stroke, butterfly, and back stroke," says Kiso. With summer is almost here you can bet more kids like Claudia will be hitting the pools! "It makes me a little nervous, but we're bringing her to lessons twice a week, she's doing a swim team, we're doing everything we can to get her exposed to the water, so that she's familiar with it," says parent Katy Kiso. Claudia and her mom helped out in a rescue demonstration showing just how fast a day at the pool can turn into a tragedy. "We've had parents that have told us, I only walked inside for a second, I went to grab the telephone. The next thing I knew, the child was floating at the bottom of the pool, and that happens so quickly, and it's silent so we want to tell you, don't rely on the child saying help help because that might not happen," says Capt. Greg Mckeown of the Orange County Fire Authority. That's why firefighters and lifeguards are making sure parents know the ABC's of pool safety adult supervision, barriers for your pool, and classes for your kids. The Orange County Fire Authority says drowning is a year round danger. This year alone they've responded to at least 12-drownings -- and many more near drownings. "We want her to be comfortable in the water, no one's really ever 100% water safe," says Katy Kiso. It's a lesson in safety you need to know -- a lesson that could save your child's life.
